A Rare Human Genetic Disease, Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia, Is Better Understood Because of the Canine Genome

A new medical discovery sheds light on the genetic origins of primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD). In using dogs as a research model in the framework of the European LUPA project, a team from the University of Liège's GIGA-Research Unit has been able to bring to light new mutations in a specific gene responsible for the development of the disease in human beings.

This research can help dogs as well as humans. Read the rest of the story here:  http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/12/101209074203.htm.

Extreme cold is tough on our pets

I came across a good article for this time of year, especially in the colder areas. There's some good tips in it from the Humane Society. Here the beginning, click on the link below for the rest of it.

Many dogs enjoy a fun romp through the snow, but when temperatures fall, it’s important for pet owners to make sure their animals stay warm enough.

It’s especially important for puppies and kittens, which cannot regulate their body temperatures as well as adult pets, said veterinarian Gary LaBar, of Pointe Animal Clinic in Fenton. If it’s below 40 degrees, puppy and kitten owners need to be very careful, he said. Small animals have potential for frostbite on their feet, and the thin skin of their ears.

Australian Man Marries a Dog

An Australian man has surprised friends by getting married — to his pet dog of five years, a golden labrador called Honey. Twenty-year-old Joe Guiso said the “marriage” ceremony performed by a friend in the Queensland town of Toowoomba was simply a creative and light-hearted way of bringing together family and friends.

A light little story from Dog News http://www.dognews.co.uk/dognews/ Dec 6, 2010. I thought it was cute. Dogs give me a great deal of joy, but I don’t think I’m ready to marry one yet. I must be the non-committal type. I hope you enjoyed it too.

There's a New Pet Store on the Web!

Hi, My name is Brigitte. I’ve just opened a new pet store and I want to introduce it to you.  There will be many items available for sale; toys, beds, crates, training tools and lots more. In addition to items for sale, you’ll find free things too. I’ve got some well researched articles to start with. Please visit often, I plan to have a directory of breeders and shelters accessible for all my visitors along with their recent news. Initially I’m starting with dogs, cats and fish. But I will be adding other pets needs over time. If you own a pet or like animals you’ll want to keep checking this blog and my website often. http://www.FabulousPetSupplies.com.
I hope you find this informative. Please let me know what you want to talk about. I’m hoping to hear from you too. Email me with any of your suggestions at info@fabulouspetsupplies.com. What kind of issues are you having with your pet? Maybe we can all find some solutions together with others who have experienced similar issues. I look forward to many conversations with you.
Remember to hug your pet today.
